New Stuff and Sins.

New stuff.

Alright, I hope yall like the new font. Sans serifs are supposed to be easier to read online, and so I went through the trouble to figure out how to tweak this template. Not so bad.

At some point I'll write something on the ACFW conference, but for now you're just going to have to wait. Just a short post before bed.

My Sins of the Son outline has gone through yet another draft...and I must say I'm quite pleased with it. It moves much faster and cuts out all the odd spots. I had to cut out the goofy parts...but they really weren't doing anything for the story. Besides, the new version has Knoa and Varen off to a pretty rocky start...it wouldn't make sense for them to be pranking each other in fun. Besides, Tenebrae could definitely use them.

So far, my word count on Sins is 40, 325. Not bad, especially after all the weed-whacking I did. Sixty-one pages in Word. That translates, roughly, to 161 paperback book pages. Which puts the pacing about where it needs to be. This makes a happy Kucu. 0=)

So, pray for me: I'm very excited where this path is taking my feet...excited and antsy at the same time. But that's normal, isn't it?

The Ice Queen and the Flake.

I've been thinking a lot about Desiree Soot Sea, the teenage, disowned Sea lord's daughter in the Phoenix and the Dragon set, both her and Anathia Lalerhon Drayan, the runaway who wound up in over her head, the ice queen.

Amazing how different and alike these two women are.

Desiree's just barely seventeen. She's a short, feisty little redhead. Flakey, but absolutely loveable. She's warm and pleasant, and most people like her. Life is a party. And life is great, except the part where her father would not allow her and her older brother to come home. Course, you would never know that. The Sea is relentless, stubborn, and so is Desiree. Her laugh is like music, her spirit pleasant, angelic.

Then there's Anathia. Cold, hard Anathia. They say she's ice, and her husband is fire. She's tall, thin, and pale, with obsidian eyes and long, jet-black hair. Her mouth is a firm, taut line. Her wit and tongue are like razors. She can reduce a grown man to tears with a single well-placed look.

But there's more. Desiree's sweet, but she's a flake. What you see is, well, all there is. She's shallow and flighty.

Anathia, though, melts under fire. Beneath the iceberg is a woman who's been through just about everything, and who'll die before allowing anyone else to suffer the same. She's a healer, and she brings life. She knows your strengths and weaknesses, fears and doubts, within the first five minutes of your meeting. And beneath the ice is the striking, charming woman that her husband fell madly in love with.

Interesting, no? Hard Anathia, so difficult to know, to see. And trust me; she's a scary woman. Desiree, so easy to approach, so easy to know...but there really isn't much beneath the surface.

Edit: It dawned on me I never really finished this train of thought. I got called away last night, and when I came back, I had lost my place.

But the whole point was simply that there's always more below the surface. If we're too easily put off, we miss out on all the Anathias in the world.

Out of its own ashes....

We'll see how long this lasts. I chose to bring this back. I mean, I'm not too big a fan of xanga, to be honest. But I like blogs, mostly reading other people's blogs. And I've figured out how to play with the html formatting a little.

I hope to make this blog worth reading again. We'll see. This whole thing was intended, originally, to be a way of keeping people current with what's going on in my world. I think I'll still do the newsletter for people who don't like being online, but I'll post here, too.

That said. Most of you know I've thrown IM by the wayside, and the boards are gone at least until January. I just needed the break.

My goals between now and January, though, are:

  • Finish Sins of the Son and prep it to try to publish
  • Get back to work on Tenebrae
  • Finish Terror's Grace (unrelated project)
  • Finish reading several books
I have a few others, too, but they're a bit personal. You have to read the newsletter for that.

Work in progress (WIP) queue:
  • Sins of the Son (The Phoenix and the Dragon, book I)
  • Terror's Grace
  • Tenebrae (The Phoenix and the Dragon, book II)
  • Shadowless (The Phoenix and the Dragon, book III)
  • Broken Gold (King's Annals, book I)
  • Unmade Gold (King's Annals, book II)
  • Remade Gold (King's Annals, book III)

Possible WIPs, but not that likely:
  • Cauldron of God (about one of the Terror's Grace characters--Christopher)
  • Curse of the Father (sequel to The Phoenix and the Dragon)
  • Sunless (prequel to P&D)
  • Silver Daylight (prequel to King's Annals)
  • The Guardian Chronicles (set of 11 novellas about the Regaljian Guardians)
  • Anathema (about Arsyn, one of the main characters in Unmade Gold)
  • Dungeon (don't ask yet)
So that's the scoop. Though I admit, right now I'm mostly drowning myself in teaching. I'm listening to Beth Moore and John Piper, going through the Breaking Free study, reading Tim Elders. I went to a Matt Chandler conference, which was...well, I hate to trivialize.

God's doing things. Know? It's funny how the last six months or so every piece of teaching I have heard or read has all been related, one way or another, to one subject: How to be a disciple of Christ.

And that holds significance for one reason: About March I prayed for one thing, that God would be my teacher, and that I would be his student.

He's funny that way, isn't he?
